Tonight the Dutch celebrate the Sinterklaasfeest! Dutch children will sing Sinterklaas songs, get presents and sweets and if they are lucky Sinterklaas and his Zwarte Pieten will visit their home. Besides learning the Dutch language, you should also learn about the Dutch culture! So who is this Sinterklaas? Find out more in the below article! https://www.dutch4beginners.com/traditionally-dutch-sinterklaas #sinterklaas #learndutch #dutch #dutchlanguage #dutch #dutchgrammar #nt2 #nt2docent #dutchclass #dutchculture #dutchlanguage #nederlandseles #nederlands #leernederlands #nederlandsleren #staatsexamen #polyglot #taalcursus #dutch4beginners #dutchculture #dutchexpats #learndutch #dutch #dutchlanguagecourses #nederlandsetaal #dutchexpats #sinterklaas #learningdutch #nederlandsleren

Today is our final part in a series of posts about the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition. It's Sinterklaas's birthday tomorrow!! YAY! Don't forget to sing to him all day long 😃 So what's so special about the 5th of December? Well tonight it is Pakjesavond (packages day), and this is when you get your bigger presents! So we have to make a distinction between younger and older people as they celebrate the 5th differently. If you are young, Sinterklaas will be visiting tonight to bring you presents. If you are very lucky, Sinterklaas may actually come visit your house for a little bit. You can sing to him and tell him how good you have been in person. However if Sinterklaas is busy, Zwarte Piet will just drop a big bag of presents at your door and knock loudly on your door. If you are a bit older (over 10-12) then you may do surprises. Very similar to Secret Santa, whereby you draw names and buy each other presents. However the present needs to be hidden in an original and personal surprise package that has to relate to Sinterklaas or that person. Making surprises takes a lot of originality and creativeness 😃 Some examples can be found in the picture below. The surprise should also come with a personalised poem from Sinterklaas, about that person. On the 5th these surprises will be unwrapped. I hope you have enjoyed this series about the Dutch Sinterklaas series and wish you an amazing Pakjesavond! If you are celebrating Sinterklaas don't forget to share your photos! Today; part 6 of a series of posts about the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition To get presents, you need to be well-behaved. If you are bad, you will be put on the naughty list in Sinterklaas’s big book and you will not receive any presents. If you have been very bad, Zwarte Piet may put you in his big bag and take you back to Spain. However, if you have been good, then this bag will supply you with many nice presents and candy. So what kind of candy is associated with the Sinterklaas tradition? Find out in our next part in a few days! Today; part 5 in our series of posts about the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition. Zwarte Piet accompanies Sinterklaas on his travels and helps him distribute all the presents to the kids. Zwarte Piet is a jolly character easily recognised by his Renaissance clothing, curly hair, red lips and blacked-up face. This black face is currently explained as Zwarte Piet is black with soot and dirt from going down the chimney to put presents in the shoes. Zwarte Piet is going through a transformation at the moment and moving more towards the Roetveegpiet Today's words are: Zwart = Black De roet = The soot De schoorsteen = The chimney Krullend haar = Curly hair Rode lippen = Red lips Learn more about Sinterklaas: https://www.dutch4beginners.com/traditionally-dutch-sinterklaas #sinterklaas #learndutch #dutch #dutchlanguage #dutch #dutchgrammar #er #nt2 #nt2docent #dutchclass #dutchculture #dutchlanguage #nederlandseles #nederlands #leernederlands #nederlandsleren #staatsexamen #polyglot #taalcursus #dutch4beginners #dutchculture #dutchexpats #learndutch #dutch #dutchlanguagecourses #nederlandsetaal #dutchexpats #sinterklaas #learningdutch #nederlandsleren

Today; part 4 of our series is about the Dutch Sinterklaas tradition. Sinterklaas travels around on his big white horse, which can walk on the top of our roofs, and helps Sinterklaas to bring you your presents. Sinterklaas's horse is called Amerigo in the Netherlands and Slecht Weer Vandaag in Belgium. The Belgian horse is called Bad Weather Today because Zwarte Piet wasn't listening properly when Sinterklaas asked Zwarte Piet what he should call his horse. Zwarte Piet responded with the weather report and as such named the horse with this funny name. But who's this Zwarte Piet? More about that in our next part in a few days! Something still represented in today's tradition, by Sinterklaas leaving presents in shoes. So what do you need to do to get a present? Before going to bed, put your shoe near a chimney or front door and sing to Sinterklaas. If you sing well, Sinterklaas will come during the night and fill your shoe with a small present and/or candy. Besides singing, don't forget to put some sugar cubes or a carrot for Sinterklaas's horse in your shoe. More about his horse in our next part in a few days!
